Johnson Creek Milwaukee Street Reconstruction
After years of dedicating resources and focus to developing the outlying areas of the community, village leaders recognized the need to upgrade and refurbish the downtown area.
As the main corridor into Johnson Creek off Interstate 94, it was important to the community that visitors be met with a good first impression and a fitting welcome.
Project intent was to spiff up downtown after the expansion on outlying areas
Using the existing buildings as the period lead, Kunkel Engineering worked closely with village leaders and drafted several sets of plans and models for review and consideration. In the end, red brick crosswalks (which are really poured and stamped concrete), period lighting, trees and village banners were selected as the focal points of the renovation project.
Extending the length of Milwaukee Street, which begins at the Village Hall and encompasses the Community Center, Library and Police and Fire Station and extends through the business district, the project also included the removal of overhead utility wires, most of which were buried before the paving began. Additionally both the sanitary sewer and water main were upgraded and replaced again, before paving began.
The initiative inspired downtown businesses and residents to follow the Village lead, and resulted in the refurbishing of several storefronts, historic buildings and homes within a three-to-four block radius of Milwaukee Street.
As further evidence of local enthusiasm for the project, a community street dance was organized and held at one end of Milwaukee Street, a christening of sorts of the new gateway to the village.
